Bedroom Design: Decorating Bedrooms with Lofty Ceilings

Post by Tracy Kaler.

Extra tall ceilings might be number one on your wish list, but furnishing a room with height has its challenges. Furniture can look short or almost dwarfed, and how do you treat that extra wall space or those big windows? We turned to our friends at Houzz for some brilliant ideas for decorating bedrooms with lofty ceilings.

This contemporary bedroom keeps things simple and straightforward, allowing the architecture to shine. The steel and stone fireplace wall with a built-in television becomes the focal point. Privacy must not be an issue because the designer chose to leave the double-height windows uncovered.

This East Midlands farmhouse bedroom celebrates the height. The room has a tower-like feel, and the designer didn’t pay much attention to the furnishings, but let the exposed wood canopy lower the ceiling height. Notice the saddle draped over the beam.

The Tower

This stunning bedroom might be minimalist, but I don’t feel like it’s missing a thing. The open view of the woods acts as a natural wall covering. No windows treatments are needed.

Garden Bedroom

With two sets of windows –– upper and lower –– this room has drapes only on the bottom set. The high windows perform double duty, allowing more light and creating architectural interest.

Tranquil Eclectic Residence

This dramatic Charlotte bedroom exudes elegance. With its vaulted ceilings and chunky moldings, the simple but neutral space gets a dose of paprika on the shams and lounge chair. The feminine chandelier feels like it’s just the right scale for this room.

Queens West

A Seattle bedroom boasts a brilliant design with a separate seating area in front of the fireplace. Notice the amount of detail and texture in this space, as well as the unique window coverings. The room is warm and cozy despite its size.

Bedroom Design: Going Bold on Your Bedroom’s Ceiling

Post by Tracy Kaler.

Since most ceilings get painted white, choosing a bold color probably doesn’t come to mind when it’s time to redecorate. But selecting a red, orange, or blue for your bedroom ceiling can set the mood, add interest, and even pull a mismatched design scheme together. So when the time comes to spec colors, be open-minded and know that white isn’t your only option. Let’s take a look at some beautiful, bright bedrooms with bold colored ceilings.

From the drapes to the bedding, this San Francisco bedroom is beautifully colored, but the hot pink ceiling takes center stage. Storage drawers and shelving keep clutter at bay.

Turquoise blue paint on both the walls and ceiling provides a boost of color in an almost white bedroom. The eclectic furnishings and lighting give the space a boudoir feel.

Green isn’t for everyone, but this bedroom feels happy and summery all year long. This room puts us in touch with nature yet doesn’t have any plants or fresh flowers. The patterned headboard works well with the otherwise neutral bedding and coordinates with the chartreuse ceiling.

A remodeled gender-neutral nursery goes bold on the ceiling with orange, and pulls the color into the furnishings. The designer of this room was a real risk taker, but the outcome is successful.

Coral in the tray ceiling complements the blue walls in this coastal home in Naples, Florida. The colorful print on the bedding and draperies lends itself to the tropical feel of the space.

WOW, right? The light fixture in this room is awesome, but it might get lost on a basic painted ceiling. This snazzy wallpaper MAKES the room. It has got great interest and it sets the color story for the space. The modern heart pattern makes me love it even more. WOW, WOW, WOW!

This jacquard-like pattern is genius! It adds fantastic interest to this white room and allows the owner to accessorize the space using corresponding mats beneath the artwork. Lonny.com calls this a Moroccan room. I call it perfection!

Here’s a pattern that really moves! How smart that the bold colors of the painted wall are broken up by a strip of white molding before your eye travels to the ceiling. Also appealing is the mix of traditional furnishings, white with a stripe bedding and some modern touches. It’s mix and match eclectic beauty at its best.

If wallpaper isn’t your thing, here are two alternate and unconventional ideas for working with or adding to what you’ve got: Wooden perforated ceiling panels and glorious tin ceiling tiles. Talk about thinking outside of the (bedroom) box!

The options for accentuating your bedroom ceiling are endless, just like your thoughts on a sleepless night. Use your imagination, choose patterns you love, and take some melatonin. With your ceiling problem solved, may you now drift off to sleep on a cloud of good design!
