Tile might not be the most obvious choice for flooring material in a bedroom, but there are those rare interiors when it’s the ideal choice. Tile can be ceramic, porcelain, stone, or terra cotta, and is most suitable in warm-weather climates, keeping your feet cool as you wake each morning.
In the US, you’ll find tile floors mostly in Florida, the Southwest, and coastal communities. Homes in the Mediterranean also gravitate toward tile floors, adding texture and pattern to structures with history and charm.
Get inspired by these five beauteous bedrooms with tile flooring.
This Amsterdam bedroom boasts whitewashed walls and Provence-style terra cotta floors. The design is simple, earthy, and attractive.
Original to the house, the ceiling beams in this Rasteau, France bedroom are 800 years old. The large, square tile keeps the palette neutral in the renovated guest quarters.
Sleek and modern, this Chicago bedroom with a marble floor pulls out all the stops. It’s elegant, classic and has a view of the water! What more could you want in a master bedroom?
A Scottsdale home uses tile throughout the bed space and the sitting room. In this case, tile as a flooring material is an excellent choice, considering the desert-like conditions in Arizona.
For whatever reason, the designer of this London bedroom opted to extend the tile from the bathroom. If I’m honest, I would’ve rather seen hardwood floors or a flat-weave carpet here to designate the change of space. The beige color is a good choice –– it blends well and doesn’t detract from the rest of the décor.
Classic Goes A Long Way: Bedrooms with Animal Prints

It’s not uncommon to find Leopard, Zebra, and Cheetah prints in traditional and contemporary rooms. In fact, animal prints are often considered classic –– a pair of pillows, a throw, or an area rug can swiftly add punch or personality to any interior.
Animal prints can make a room feel less serious or more luxurious; they’re versatile and adaptable. With the above in mind, it’s easy to understand why these bold, earthy patterns never go out of style. Let’s explore how we can successfully use animal prints in bedrooms.
Ralph Lauren zebra pillows create a soft backing against a wooden headboard in this London home. The elephant art above the bed ties all of the elements together. I like the style of the bedside lamps, but I would’ve selected a different pattern or a plain finish rather than more zebra, allowing the print on the bed to be the star.
Pairing pink with animal prints isn’t the most obvious choice, but the duo creates a dynamic interior in this Connecticut bedroom. Beyond the artwork, the animal print bed and pillows are the only pattern in the space. The Roman shades help soften the windows and allow light to filter in.
Burberry and leopard complement each other nicely in his Little Rock bedroom by Tobi Fairley Interior Design. This room is a fantastic example of how to combine patterns with ease.
A cowhide adds a whim of sophistication to this child’s bedroom. With a few small changes, the space can easily transition to an adult bedroom in the future, if desired.
Bedroom Design: Decorating with Murals

Looking to redecorate your bedroom, and feeling unusually creative? If you’re crafty, you might consider painting a scene, object, or pattern on part or all of a wall. Murals add life and color to the dullest space, and could be a fun project for you and a friend, or you and your family.
Try using stencils if freehand sketching isn’t your strength. Select a design that works well with the age and architecture of your room, have a vision, and draw a few ideas on paper before you lift the brush. If you’re not so arty or adventurous, you can hire a faux painter to take on the task instead.
The sky’s the limit as to what you can paint. Have a look at these four different murals for inspiration in your bedroom.
This room exudes sophistication. The mural adds the right amount of architectural detail to this mostly neutral space. The magenta chairs lend a modern edge and a splash of color to the interior.
Once an ordinary room, there’s nothing ordinary about this bedroom now. It’s amazing what some pattern will do to an otherwise lackluster space. The floral mural on the bed wall makes this room feel happy and almost whimsical. The simple furnishings practically disappear because your eye is on that painted wall.
This mural is an awesome design for an avid traveler’s home. Again, notice the unfussy furnishings that leave space for the colorful mapped wall in this West Village loft.
This One Central Park bedroom in Sydney takes on a Midcentury Modern feel. The leafless tree branch mural sets the tone for the entire space, giving it a calm, relaxing, and luxurious feel.

Books tend to be an essential ingredient in many rooms. Writers and readers turn to books to escape and decompress, which is why you’ll often find books in bedrooms. I have a bookshelf packed with a variety of reads in my bedroom –– you’d find everything from cookbook anthologies to travel books, to textbooks and bestsellers.
Let’s take a look at how books can mingle in bedrooms, and create a library within each of these five spaces.
This ultra-chic bedroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is far from the dark, stereotypical library. The faux fur adds a touch of glam while the shelves are strategically accessorized in this comfy, inviting apartment.

Glossy magazines, popular titles, and a selection of classics line the shelves of the bed wall in this modern oasis. The “Womb” chair and ottoman by Saarinen is the perfect scale for the corner. What a great spot to get lost in a suspenseful or humorous novel.

Bedroom Design: Keeping It Natural in a Bedroom

Natural materials and earth tones create a calming effect in most any space. In bedrooms, we welcome serene elements and colors to encourage relaxation, preparing us for a good night’s sleep or a lazy afternoon nap.
These four bedrooms inspire us to go back to basics with neutral colors, rough-hewn woods, and linens and cottons, while also focusing on what lies beyond the windows as much as what’s in the bedroom itself.
A Big Fork Montana bedroom boasts a lofty tree house feel. Nature surrounds, and the space resembles a screened porch with its wide windows and scenic view. Yellow on the bed seems to be the near-perfect color to contrast the amount of green outside. This room takes on a modern yet rustic aesthetic.
Driftwood attached to the wall, suspended oyster shells, and linen on the bed complete this shabby-chic bedroom. The earthy combination of materials takes us back to nature in the best way possible in this beachy yet primitive room. What an innovative design!
Natural materials are the basis for this eclectic Montreal bedroom. From the pine bed to the metal tableside lamp to the Africa headdress as artwork, this room is not only earthy but also interesting. With so much to look at, this space proves that neutral colors never need be boring.
Zen-like with a mid-century, Japanese design, this bedroom sports an unusually low bed with an asymmetrical bed wall. Somehow, all of the components work well together, including the garden stool as an accent piece. This home is located in Orange County, CA, which is no surprise to me. I feel relaxed just looking at the photo.
