Bedroom Design: Is a Headboard Necessary?

Post by Tracy Kaler.

A headboard gives a space a more polished look, and it’s often an essential ingredient in a bedroom’s overall aesthetic. But the question remains, is a headboard really necessary? Personally, I love an upholstered layer between the wall and my head, but a lot of people looking to streamline their design prefer no headboard at all. Let’s take a look at some successful bedrooms that don’t seem to miss a beat even though they’re sans headboards.

This minimalist bedroom in Amsterdam plays on whites and grays with touches of black. Bedside lamps take on a sculptural quality against the stark backdrop. The room has a Scandinavian feel.

The home of Karlijn and Pieter

I don’t miss the headboard in this Melbourne, Australia bedroom. Artwork hangs low, and the darker shams almost trick the eye into thinking there’s a headboard, even though there isn’t.

Daylesford

A summer cabin in Sydney uses plenty of stripes –– the floor pattern, window paneling, and bedding. With this room layout, not using a headboard was the best choice considering the window is in the center of the bed wall. The other option would’ve been to cover the window with fabric, creating a softer background for a headboard.

Swedish Summer Cabin in Sydney

This London bedroom’s decorated ledge gives the illusion of a headboard. The colorful artwork makes a statement in this bright, airy room.

PRIMROSE HILL

Tony Ivey & Associates used an oversized bolster as a makeshift headboard in this Albuquerque bedroom, which also has a Scandinavian feel. No headboard lends itself to this uncluttered, modern design.

Bedroom Design: Decorating with Checks in a Bedroom

Post by Tracy Kaler.

If you associate check patterns with country, you’d be correct, but that’s not the only decorating style where they can be used successfully. Checks come in all sizes and colors, and depending on their application and the other elements in the room, they might pull together a modern, traditional, or eclectic design.

I’m a fan of checks when paired with other patterns, or if they’re bold and really make a statement. Let’s take a peek at some checks in bedrooms. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised how chic checks can be!

Alabama Lake Home

This Alabama bedroom is delightful, isn’t it? The gingham check on the window valances and footstools offers the right amount of structure. This room shows us how to mix the modern and traditional. I adore everything about this tailored bedroom.

Cotswold Manor House

Sweet and delicate, this Cotswold Manor juvenile bedroom feels feminine with its pink, white, and beige color scheme. The check complements the floral perfectly.

Tori Murphy Living Inspiration

An impressive example of a modern country bedroom, this room has only the bare essentials, yet there’s something incredibly soothing about it. The large check on the bed covering looks terrific with the muted chevron on the accent pillows.

In The Country

A check area rug isn’t the most obvious choice for a floor covering, but I believe it helps complete this bedroom. The red lacquered door and the quilt at the foot of the bed help tie everything together.

Cranleigh: Modern Country Home

Another modern country home boasts a charming boy’s room with a check on the walls. The wall covering creates an ideal backdrop for the simple furnishings and accessories.

Shooting Star Bedroom

Can’t find the check? This cozy bedroom has subtle check patterns in the shams and the textured matelassé coverlet. The faux rabbit, timber stools and artwork above the bed add surprise to what would otherwise be a pretty dull space. I think of this room as funky yet rustic.

Bedroom Design: How to Use Stripes in a Bedroom

Post by Tracy Kaler.

Wide. Skinny. Horizontal. Vertical. Awning. Pinstripe. Stripes play a role in our everyday lives through the clothing we wear and the rooms we live in. When it comes to interior décor, there’s a host of ways to get creative with stripes. From walls to ceilings to upholstery and accent pillows, let’s take a look at six bedrooms using stripes in different applications.

Bold horizontal stripes make a statement on the walls of this kids’ room. It’s no surprise that this townhouse is located in Miami, as this colorful space boasts a real Florida feel.

A striped bench in a London loft introduces pattern and color in a predominantly white space. Coordinating pillows are just matchy enough. Also a stripe, the wood ceiling creates interest on a large surface.

Classic black and white striped wall covering sets the backdrop for this ornate headboard. Black and white can appear dated sometimes, but in this room, the color combo looks timeless.

Stripes take center stage in this Charleston bedroom through an area rug. Built-in beds and a window seat complete the efficient design.

Designer Liz Carroll worked her magic by using stripes on the ceiling of this sweet, mostly pink bedroom. A ceiling isn’t the most obvious location for stripes, but in this room, it works well.

A striped headboard and floral accent pillows make for a lovely combination in this Vancouver home. Simple and straightforward, this room is all about texture.

Bedroom Design: Creating a Farmhouse Bedroom

Post by Tracy Kaler.

Lots of wood. White walls and floors. Quilts. Shaker-style furniture. These are the makings of a farmhouse bedroom. Love the look but live in an apartment? No worries. Whether you prefer a traditional or modern interior, you don’t have to live in an actual farmhouse to create this style.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can decorate your own bedroom and achieve the farmhouse look.

Create the architecture
A San Francisco guest bedroom goes traditional farmhouse with board and batten walls, pitched ceilings, and simple cottage-style furnishings. Red and white gingham and structured window shades complete the country feel.

Keep it neutral.
A South African farmhouse stays neutral with beige walls, white bedding, and natural-fiber carpeting. The classic Burberry-patterned throw tossed on the bed adds a splash of color.

Be classic and simple.
This sweet bedroom boasts the right amount of everything –– color, pattern, texture, and detail. Painted a soft shade of white, the space is on the smaller side, but has a big personality. Bright orange paint covers the French doors, allowing light to flow into the room.

Go minimalist.
A crocheted coverlet, crisp bed linens, and painted floors give this New York farmhouse bedroom a modern aesthetic. Minimal furnishings contribute to the clean, uncluttered design.

Try rustic.
This Dallas bedroom’s vintage accessories and antiques create an equestrian-themed farmhouse bedroom. Cozy and chic, the room is renovated, but feels like it dates back to the 1800s when the home was constructed.

Bedroom Design: The Magic of Mirrors in Bedrooms

Post by Tracy Kaler.

“I love mirrors. They let one pass through the surface of things.”—Claude Chabrol

Whether you love mirrors or not, you can’t deny that these popular accessories are both decorative and practical. Every home contains a few, and usually, a mirror finds its way into a bedroom, be it hidden on a closet door or covering a wall in plain sight.

Mirrors can add personality and quickly change the mood of a room. Let’s take a look at five bedrooms utilizing mirrors in different ways.

A mirror decorates the bed wall of minuscule London sleep space. According to the designer, failing to use mirrors is often a pitfall. We shouldn’t overlook the use of mirrors – a mirror can be your best friend.

This glamorous Dallas room uses decorative mirrors as subtle yet stunning pieces of art above the bedside tables. Notice the layers in this bedroom’s design and how well they work together.

Light, bright, and airy is the theme of this all-white bedroom in a Fire Island Beach House. Here, the mirrors give the illusion of a larger space.

A tiled wall mirror and mirrored wall sconce make a bold statement in this Raleigh bedroom. The mirror’s reflection is more interesting than both pieces.

A mirrored dressing table and coordinating wall mirror complete the shabby chic look in this San Francisco home, proving that mirrored furniture can be successful in any style bedroom.
