Bedroom Design: A Global Room

Post by Laura Cheng.

In my blog a few weeks ago, I chatted about geometry. In the flurry of the back to school season and as our presidential candidates debate about how to best revamp our nation’s great education system, I continue my educational discussion this week on another elementary subject:  geography.  There is no better way to learn about geography than through the use of visual tools, such as a globe. Despite their educational value, globes are not just limited to classroom use. A globe in the bedroom can be the perfect accompaniment to achieve an A+ room.

Before there was Rand McNally, there was Nendo, a Japanese design company that created this black and white “CORONA” globe.  Whether you are looking to outfit your bedroom floor or bedroom desk, their 3 fast food sizes – small, medium, and extra large has it covered. In addition to the absence of color, there is something very feminine and subtle about the supporting sphere and base. They are the elements that transform this classic school supply to modern artwork. I am a minimalist, so when I found these globes, I was instantly attracted. My bedroom is easily cluttered so a defining black and white globe that can express itself behind all the clutter is exactly what I need.

Globes can be rested on nightstands or used as paperweights in your bedroom office. Some globes even illuminate so they would add the perfect layer of light to any existing bedroom lighting. Or if your bedroom is lacking light, turn a vintage globe into a full light source. A pendant light fashioned out of a globe is such a unique idea. Your “golden” globes can be brighter than all of Meryl Streep’s combined. Kristi Linauer of Addicted2Deocrating.com explains how here. Just please ask your grandfather first before you take his vintage one to experiment with.

A globe provides visual interest. There is always something interesting to look at and dream about and relate to. This themed picture exactly illustrates the point that I have been trying to make these past few weeks. Overkill? Just a bit. Realistic? Fat chance. Lesson learned? Definitely.

Bedroom Design: Fit For a Queen

Post by Erin Sears.

When I was a girl, I never wanted to be a princess.  I wanted to be QUEEN.  With red hair, pale skin, and the middle name Elizabeth, I was sure I was a royal descendant.  The meager contents of my current bank account not withstanding, I still believe in decorating on a large scale.  Your home and your bedroom in particular, is a reflection of who you are as a person.  At home, you have the total freedom to surround yourself with furniture and objects that inspire you and make you feel good.  Why play small?  Go for it!  Good furniture is an essential investment that will pay off for years to come.  You don’t have to look far for this kind of luxury.  The Charles P. Rogers website can provide you with many stunning options. I still want to be queen and this week I’d like to highlight some beautiful beds that could make you feel like royalty as well.

First, the new Tansy platform bed in white leather.  Gorgeous! A perfect place to wake in the morning prepared to meet your royal subjects.

Tansy Leather Platform Bed

Nothing says drama and opulence like a canopy bed.  For real.  If we’re being honest, a lot of us dreamed of having a bed like this when were kids.  You’re a grown up now, so it’s time to make those childhood dreams a reality.  This one is the Cairo Canopy Bed with Bell Top.  I like it with the finial option.  If you’re going to do it, you might as well go all the way, right?

Finally, we have the Marseille Bed in the black and gold finish or antique white.  It’s the perfect way to display your coat of arms with pride.

All beds can be found on the Charles P. Rogers website and are offered at a variety of price points that won’t empty your kingdom’s coffers.  May you and yours have a wonderful nights rest. Sincerely, the QUEEN

Things We Like: Veranda Magazine + Charles P Rogers Wing Bed

Post by Kyle St. Romain.

This October, Veranda Magazine is featuring a Charles P Rogers Ultra White Wing Bed in its upcoming spread on upholstered beds. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering our Wing Bed has also appeared in earlier editions of Architectural Digest and Country Living Magazine. They just can’t get enough of our beds!

Classic wing back chairs, characterized by subtle curves, inspire the Charles Rogers Wing Bed. It features individually applied nail heads that trace the contours of the bed, and add a hand-finished quality. The Charles P Rogers Wing Bed comes in two colors: Ultra White or Chestnut Brown to match any bedroom design.

If you haven’t considered an upholstered bed before, you should. Upholstered beds fit nicely with almost any décor, and make the perfect focal point for your bedroom; a true statement piece. Upholstered beds also come with the added bonus that they can be reupholstered, which allows you to change the look and feel of your bedroom without having the replace the entire bed. However, if you’ve taken the plunge to buy a high quality upholstered bed, chances are you’ll want to leave it just the way it came. The Charles P Rogers Wing Bed is one of those beds you probably won’t want to change: they come upholstered in top grain leather, which will be hard to improve upon.

Have you spotted any of our beds featured in magazines? We’d love to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below.

Things We Like: Art Deco Design

Post by Kyle St. Romain.

I love all things Art Deco, and you’d be crazy not to. For me, art deco elicits nostalgia from an era since gone. Art deco architecture is nothing short of grand, and it’s the style I imagine high rollers in the 1920s living in: well-traveled, well-built, and wanted.

Art Deco remains popular still today, and its influences can be seen in almost all types of design: architecture, interior design, fashion, and art. However, art deco is perhaps most easily associated with architecture. Indeed, many of the world’s most famous buildings are Art Deco inspired: The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center.

If you’re lucky enough to live in an old Art Deco building, ideally constructed in the 1930s (when deco was used extensively throughout the United States), you’ve got it made. However, these architectural gems are becoming increasingly scarce which leaves most of us with the next best thing: art deco inspired interior design.

With a little creativity and patience to wait for the right vintage piece, an Art Deco-inspired bedroom design is very doable. The most permanent ways to bring deco into your bedroom would be with new, geometric crown molding painted in metallic silver or gold, marble wall panels, and elaborate ceilings. However, these more permanent changes would mean you really have to commit to the eclectic art deco theme.

If you’re looking for an easier way to bring art deco into your bedroom, furnishings are a great place to start. Armoires are very common in Art Deco bedroom, which also gives you more storage space. Mirrors are also typical in deco design. And while it’s perfectly fine to use wall mirrors, mirrored furniture and sunburst shaped mirrors are more clever ways to introduce the reflective element into your design. Mirrors also help smaller rooms feel open, which is a plus if you live in the city.

If you’re short on Art Deco inspiration, SampleBoard has an excellent blog post about getting into art deco design. You can also look for pictures of the interior of the Empire State building, or the Paramount Theatres in Oakland, CA. Both of these are prime examples of art deco at its finest. You can also search for photos of old train stations, which were primarily built in the art deco style.

Bedroom Design: Shades of Gray

Post by Erin Sears.

Glorious Gray

Living in Portland, Oregon, I’m accustomed to gray.  We’re old friends.  I’ve accepted that soon the blue skies of summer will be replaced by the cozy gray dome that we live under for most of the year.  You’d think I’d be sick of gray, but gray happens to be one of the hottest colors in home décor right now and I love it!  Painting a bedroom gray is a great way to provide your room with a grounding neutral color to which you can add luscious pops of color.  Yellows, purples, turquoise and hot pink all look stunning against a gray base.  Conversely, adding gray accessories in a room adds an element of sophistication.  It shows that you know what you’re doing.  In the September 2012 issue of House Beautiful readers listed gray as one of their favorite color choices.  Let’s take a closer look:

If you aren’t able to commit to painting your room or you are still saving up for that special bed purchase, how about choosing gray bed linens?  Try the European linen duvet and shams from Charles P. Rogers.  Nothing brings a room together faster than good bedding.  Enjoy!
